Bowling Green Park

NYC's oldest public park, Bowling Green park has seen many things but maybe its most memorable event is what happened after the Declaration of Independence was read in the city for the first time. The picture accompanying this post tells a large part of the story. The colonists were so excited after the reading that they stormed down to the park and torn down a statue of King George III. In the picture you'll also notice some crowns atop the fence posts. If you go to the park today, the fence is still there but those crowns are missing. The colonists cut them off and melted them down for bullets to use in the Revolutionary War.
